Pantone's 2012 color of the year is "Tangerine Tango." I love this hot reddish orange color! According to Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, Tangerine Tango is "sophisticated but at the same time dramatic and seductive...reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset, Tangerine Tango marries the vivaciousness and adrenaline rush of red with the friendliness and warmth of yellow, to form a high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy.”

Apparently this attention-getting color has risen in popularity among fashion designers. So, I set out to find some bridesmaids dresses in this hot color. Here are some of these lovelies I found:

I have been a long time fan of the Belvedere (its my favorite building in Baltimore) and more recently have become a fan of Truffles Catering. I am especially a fan of those awesome Truffles ladies who throw fabulous soirees and plan perfect weddings! Want to know what I'm talking about? Attend one of their Tasting Tuesdays!

The first and third Tuesday of each month Truffles will feature tapas-style tastings of their delicious hors d'oeuvres, salads, entrees, and desserts for clients interested in their catering services for an event. Now that you have decided which bridal shows to attend this season, make sure you are prepared to get the most out of your time (and money). Here are some tips to help make bridal shows a piece of cake:

1. Have an empty tote. Be sure to have a bag to carry all of the informational brochures, business cards, information packets, etc you will want to take home. If you are attending a big show, you will be amazed by the amount of literature you'll be carrying around.

2. Have a notebook and pen. Of course, a lot of information will be provided by the vendor in promotional materials. But you may want to make notes about particular vendors you liked, specific services they provide, price quotes, or questions you had answered. If you're an overachiever, bring a fine point Sharpie- that way you can write on any surface, including glossy promotional literature.

3. Have calling cards. Either your business cards, personal calling cards, or self-printed labels with your name, mailing address, email address, and phone number. Most vendors will already have this information when you register to attend, but if there is a particular vendor you are interested in, be sure they receive one. Vendors may offer discounts or giveaways to brides they meet at particular events.

4. Have a check book. For the most part, you'll just be learning about vendors. But, you never know what you may find- the perfect photographer with limited availability. There are only 52 weekends in a year and vendors can fill up fast. Also, some vendors have "show only specials." In order to receive a discounted rate, you must make a deposit during the show. Don't be afraid to ask vendors if they have any show promotions.

5. Have a camera. Be ready to take photos of fashion shows, wedding vignettes, cakes, etc. Inspiration abound, you'll want to be able to review later. Also, take photos of the booths of any vendors you were particularly interested in. It will be an easy visual reminder of conversations or thoughts you may have had. At the end of the day it may be difficult to keep things clear after collecting so many business cards, a booth photo should provide you with basic information, such as the vendor's name.

6. Have comfortable shoes. Ladies, I'm not kidding. You're going to be standing and walking for hours, carrying a bunch of brochures, catalogs, and magazines - don't miss out by distracting foot pain or having to leave early. Most door prizes or raffles are announced later in the show and you must be present to win.

7. Have an entourage. Bring people who have opinions you trust. Consider people who have a sense of style or taste you admire, people who are good with negotiations or making financial decisions, and people who are good with keeping your needs in mind. I mention that last one as we all have friends and family who are good at deciding what they'd like, make sure your posse includes someone who not only knows you well but can advocate on your behalf.

8. Have a good time. Wedding shows are full of great food, beautiful decor, and fun music. Take a moment to enjoy the time with your friends and family. Some shows will have a dance floor, don't hesitate to bust a move! And remember if you're feeling overwhelmed, just step out and take a moment to yourself.

The beginning of the new year- days are shorter, defrosting your windshield is a daily occurrence, the gym is suddenly crowded, and everyone is hosting a bridal show. That's right, its bridal show season! Of course, you can't hit them all, so how do you decide? Well first, here is a run down of some of the upcoming bridal shows in the Baltimore area:

So now that you realize its not physically possible to attend all the upcoming events in the Baltimore area (nor would you want to feel like a "bridezilla" for doing so), its time to make some decisions.

Things to consider:

Location Location Location

If your venue is hosting a bridal show, you'll want to attend. You will be able to spend more time in the space and experience a large event at your venue. Also, most venues have relationships with specific vendors, especially caterers, so you will further get to know your vendors.

You should attend a show in the area of your wedding. For example, planning a wedding on the Eastern Shore? You'll want to attend a bridal show across the bay. Although many vendors provide services throughout the area, attending a show local to your venue will provide you an opportunity to meet local vendors whom you may not otherwise have the chance.

Do Your Homework

Remember, this is not only a way for you to discover new vendors, but also a way to do some one stop shopping. Most event websites will list the vendors who will be exhibiting. Think of the vendors you'd like to talk to and see which event will have the more of your perspective vendors.

Think about the sections of your planning left to do. Have you planned the bridal party's attire? - Will this event have a fashion show? Still considering a theme or color scheme? - Will this event have vignettes to inspire you? And don't be afraid to contact the event host to get further details.

Size of Event (and You)

Maybe its just my background in psychology, but personality is something to consider (and not just yours, think of the family members and friends who may be tagging along). Are you going to be excited or overwhelmed by a huge event? Are you happy to push through crowds to find what you want? Do you do better in intimate settings? Would you rather have more individualized attention and compromise on the number of vendors? It may seem inconsequential, but it can make a difference. Sensory overload can be a real problem!

Use Your Friends

Have any newlywed friends? Ask which shows they attended and what their experiences were. Social media is another great way to get some advice. Ask Facebook friends for some feedback and suggestions.

Be Bold!

I have spent a lot of time looking at ideas for decorating my home. I've been really inspired by Jonathan Adler. In his "manifesto," Adler says, "we believe colors can't clash" and "minimalism is a bummer." Many of his designs involve mixing bold patters and colors. Adler also suggests mixing the "fancy with the frisky." Decor that is too formal will make you sad, however too much whimsy will leave you feeling less-than-chic. Therefore you should "embrace a mix, pairing the chic classical foundation...with a layer of playful punctuation." Here are some of examples of Adler's design:

After looking at Adler's work, have fallen in love with classic patterns in bold colors:

Imperial Trellis, Chevron Stripe, Greek Key, Damask

How can one incorporate these ideas into wedding design? I went on a search to see what others have done before. Check out some inspiring images:

I love the bright yellow chevron table runner paired with pink chavari chairs! Less keen on the denim "vases," but I do like the color and texture they bring to the table setting.

I heart chevron! This print can be incorporated into anything, the invitations, the table cloths, the cake, the napkins... Just have to use your imagination.

Damask is such a classic print. But, when done in bold colors or mixed with modern elements, the formality is taken down a peg and it becomes more modern and fun.

I love this wedding! First, what a beautiful bold color pallet. Bright orange, hot pink, vibrant teal... Then throw in a bold pattern, black and white stripes and, hello, chic has arrived! I adore the small elements of black and white stripes- the groom's bowtie and boutonniere, the brides bouquet and dress. It's important to incorporate a theme through out the wedding without overdoing it. They certainly kept it balanced!

This decor is fabulous. Mixing pink, orange and fuchsia with bright white and a Greek key pattern is fantastic. Also a well balanced mix, repeating the white on the planter boxes keeps the decor cohesive. This is an example of an analogous color scheme. Remember to consult your color wheel (or read my blog post on color theory) when choosing a wedding color pallet.

This wedding may be my favorite of them all! I love how they used so many bold prints (stripes, trellis, dots) in different colors. And they mesh perfectly together. Although the prints are bold, they work well together because they all utilize white. And, clear chavari chairs! (Swoon!) So much style in this wedding decor.

So what are some things we can take away from Mr. Adler and the inspiring photos?
1. Don't be afraid to use prints and stripes.
2. Use classic design elements in bold colors to keep a balance of formal and modernity.
3. Use these prints and colors throughout the decor (and elements of the attire) to keep things cohesive.
4. Consult a color wheel to keep the color pallet harmonious.
5. The patterns don't all have to be the same scale. Mix a bold wide stripe with a small dot, etc.
6. You're wedding should be your style, so if you want it to be bold and modern, go for it!

Love this idea! Plus its DIY! Get to a photo booth (FYI, there is one in the AVAM) or "make your own." Just find a back drop and a camera with a timer or better yet, enlist a friend to snap the photos. You'll need some signs, either make your own or you can buy some adorable ones on etsy.com. Get creative- hand drawn signs, cut out letters or printed out words can work beautifully! Want some more ideas? Check out my post on photo props. iDo: Brides Wedding Genious App for your iPhone

My oh my! It's been a while...I apologize, dear readers. I have been one busy gal! I barely had time to check my email, let alone bring you any fresh wedding inspiration. Which got me thinking- how do you do it? How do you have the time it takes to plan a wedding? And, more importantly, in age of technology, how can it be any easier?

Just last month Conde Nast, publisher of Brides Magazine, brought out a new app for the iPhone: Brides Wedding Genius.

Apparently the former version had some bugs which have been remedied. So, I downloaded version 2.0. So far, so good. The basic version is free, but has some great upgrades for nominal fees. If you're all about keeping your life organized in your phone, this app is for you!

The basic (free) version offers galleries of wedding gowns, bridesmaids dresses, engagement and wedding rings, and travel destinations. It's not terribly helpful. But, if nothing else, may be a great way to peruse some ideas while sitting in line at the MVA. Plus, if you see something you like, you can put it in your "Inspiration Folder" or share it with family and friends via email, twitter or facebook.

The upgrade gets you the "Task Tracker," a planning calendar based on your wedding date. It offers a variety of features including assigning tasks to people (via email), status updates, and tips for each suggested task. For example, you can pick a dress, find a local vendor (based on your location), and schedule an appointment to try it. You can also sync data with their website and share that information with others, such as your wedding party. Check it out, let me know what you think! Happy Planning!

Curvy Inspiration: Plus Size Wedding Gowns

As a plus-sized woman, I am well aware of the problems with shopping for clothes. If you are lucky enough to find something cute, its likely not flattering. If its above a size 14 (note that's the average size of the American woman), its likely more expensive and of lesser quality. When it comes to wedding attire, the same holds true. Worse yet, if you can find a wedding dress designer that offers your size, you will likely end up standing in a store where they have only one or two dresses in your size for you to try on. Meanwhile, the size 2 next to you has a room full of choices. So, where are the gorgeous plus-size wedding dresses? Well, I am on a mission to find out! Real Inspiration: Chelsea & Jason

Chelsea and Jason chose Mt. Vernon, one of my favorite Baltimore neighborhoods, as the backdrop for their wedding The ceremony was held at St. Ignatius and the reception at the Peabody Library. Their photographers, Artful Weddings by Sachs Photography, did an amazing job capturing this couple's special day! Anne and Joe Sachs, a husband-wife team, never fail to impress me with their images. Chelsea and Jason loved working with them- "talented but relaxed, calming, warm, and just fun to hang out with."

The couple met 13 years ago at the University of Virginia, through a mutual friend, one of the groomsmen, Matt. Chelsea explains, "We all moved to NYC right after school. And while Jason did spend a lot of time in my bed those first few years - it was always without me in it! I lived in midtown Manhattan with Matt's (now) wife. Jason lived in Hoboken. I worked a ton and was never at the apartment. Jason and Matt would out late in the city, and Jason would just crash in my room while I wasn't there so he wouldn't have to take the train back to Hoboken. It wasn't until almost 10 years later, when he stopped by my Christmas party in 2007 that we finally hit it off! Not sure what is was about that cold December night in the East Village, but we've pretty much been stuck together ever since."

The bride's amazing gown came from Pronovias. They have a huge store in Manhattan, but you can also shop the collection right here in Baltimore, at Francescas Bridal. Her purple satin shoes came from DSW. Chelsea says, "I'm a sucker for a bargain!" Her gorgeous make-up was done by Debbie Federico.

The invitations were designed by Alexandra at Aerialist Press. Inspired by the iron work around the stacks of the Peabody, the invitations were custom designed. Quick turn around time and easy to work with, Chelsea highly recommends Aerialist Press. The flowers, including centerpieces, bouquets and boutonnieres were made by Fleur de Lis. The bride chose to have a vivid purple bouquet including purple hyacinth, pink and purple anemonies, purple tulips and black magic roses. I love it! I love brides adding pops of color to their ensembles, and bouquets are the perfect way to accomplish that! The bridesmaids bouquets featured baby green hydrangea, purple tulips, hot pink and plum dendrobium orchids. Beautiful! Fleur de Lis, located in Baltimore, has been making weddings more beautiful with their creations for over 18 years!

The dashing wedding party sported tuxedos and purple bridesmaids dresses. The maids dresses were from Nordstrom.com. The dresses are JS Boutique, they come in a variety of colors with optional straps. The couple didn't use a wedding planner. Jason (the groom) did most of the planning!

The Peabody Library is truly a breathtaking venue! The reception was catered by Chefs Expressions, whic also made the cake. It had layers of chocolate cake, lemon cake, and blueberries. Yumm! And guests danced the night away to the sounds of William Steward of My Deejay. The ring bearer's pillow came from Michael's Arts and Crafts.

Interview with Felicity C Weddings (Part 2)

In a nutshell, Felicity, as a wedding planner, offers couples a stress-free wedding. As she puts it, "Wedding planning is not what you expect. No matter how many weddings you have been to or been a part of, there are so many logistics and decisions to be made that you don't realize until it is your own turn. In my opinion, the process can feel like you are producing the Oscars. Aside from the logistics, there are so many emotions, people and expectations involved- it can make for a tricky line to walk to please everyone. I am a neutral professional coming in to be an advocate and resource for my clients in order to safeguard my clients' vision. Every wedding is so exciting for me, my passion is planning events. The number one comment I hear from incoming clients is that they have a hard time 'trying to remember what they need to remember' as the big day approaches. I offer peace of mind that all their hard work is in good hands and they can enjoy their big day."

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing brides planning a wedding?

"The biggest challenge facing brides today is the overwhelming amount of bridal information out there. What started as resources are now making some brides feel competitive or even insecure about their big day. Don't get me wrong, I love to pour over bridal blogs and magazines but I don't like when brides feel like they have to live up to a standard. I've had brides say that they either can't do this or they HAVE to have that because 'they saw it at their friend's wedding.' I've seen brides unable to make decisions on details small to big because they keep seeing more ideas daily and it gets really hard to edit everything down to a cohesive & beautiful focus."

"On the flip side, a lot of brides are realizing that there are less rules which is very freeing. One of my favorite ideas, cupcakes instead of cake, was unheard of even 5 years ago and is now at thousands of weddings each year. Your wedding style is like the names you give your children- it should be unique to you, you have to love it because YOU have to live with it and everyone else can do it their own way."

Have you had to be more creative in the planning process because of the economic recession? If so, how?

"Couples have always had budgets to stick to but the recession has definitely encouraged creative thinking. Vendors have a larger responsibility now to really understand the vision of their client, to advise within their budget and overall to be a huge part of helping couples edit their vision. Likewise, clients have a responsibility to be realistic in what they want, what they can afford and what they can 'DIY'. That is why having a planner is such an advantage, we can read between the lines to find what clients are really seeking and utilize some 'industry tricks'. For example, if a bride has her heart set a having a wedding cake, bakers can re-size cakes by width or height to reduce cost and then couples can supplement with a sheet cake. Overall, making sure each detail has been researched and is necessary to the vision is key to budgeting a fabulous wedding."

What advice would you offer a bride planning her wedding with out a professional wedding planner?

"Planning can become a full time job and it is essential to stay organized. Stay focused on what you and your beloved envision for your big day and stand your ground with vendors. Planning a wedding is a lot like buying a car or a house, arm yourself with what you like, what you don't like and be aware that you will receive a lot of unsolicited advice. Lastly, trust your instincts and think about the guest experience."

"This is hard because I love something special about each venue! I have my favorite vendors on my website but to name just a few, I really enjoyed working with Swan Harbor Farm in Havre de Grace as a venue, Rev. Laura Cannon of Divine Transformation as an officiant, Sascha's Catering in Mt. Vernon and the ReadyLuck collective of photographers. I love vendors who are as passionate as they are talented and I'm very grateful to have the pleasure of working with so many great Baltimore professionals."

I was so excited when Felicity Carmody, wedding planner and owner of Felicity C Weddings, agreed to an interview! First of all, Felicity has been planning events since high school! She also spent years doing corporate event planning and eventually found her niche in wedding planning. She started her own company in 2009 and has been planning weddings ever since. I couldn't wait to ask my many questions about the planning process and the planner-client relationship!

Can you tell my readers some of the reasons why hiring a wedding planner is so important?

- A stress-free wedding day: "Day of coordination (DOC) is my most popular package and for good reason. Even if couples have time, energy and a desire to plan their wedding by themselves, no couple wants to carry the stress of all the details on the actual wedding day. My DOC package essentially ensures peace of mind that every detail was accounted for and my day of timeline ensures that the family, wedding party and all the vendors are on the same page."

- Ideas and personalization: "And since ideally I come in a few months ahead of the wedding, there is also the added bonus of having an industry perspective as part of my job is to stay current with wedding trends and ideas. I love personalizing each wedding, from hiring a bagpiper to honor the groom's heritage, having a snowball cocktail hour or creating an interactive guestbook."

- Budgeting help and vendor liaison: "For couples on a tight budget, with very busy schedules, planning from afar or are just overwhelmed by the wedding industry, a wedding planner is a key resource throughout the planning process. From budget tracking to vendor meetings, planners are client advocates in many areas and help move the planning along."

What can or should a bride expect from her wedding planner?

"The package determines the expectations the bride should have for her planner. I offer day of coordination, partial and full planning packages, all of which vary in the amount of assistance I give to my clients. Beyond package specifics, the planner is expected to be a professional, organized and experienced wedding resource for the bride throughout the planning process. Couples hire planners for various reasons, its important that both planners and couples clearly communicate their expectations from the beginning."

How soon in the planning process should a bride come to you?

"As soon as couples realize that they need a planner, they should contact me for a free introductory meeting. I have taken on DOC clients 3 weeks before the wedding but please remember that there is no such thing as 'too far ahead of time' in wedding planning! A lot of clients don't think that they need a DOC if they have a site coordinator, but their role is completely different from mine. As obvious as this sounds, the responsibility of a site coordinator is to coordinate the site, NOT the wedding. Basically, they ensure that the site completes the contracted responsibilities- that the venue is clean and operating well, the staff is competent and on schedule, the site resources (chairs, tables, lighting, temperature) are available, etc. It is rare that the site coordinator has contact with every other vendor before the wedding, creates a full vendor timeline or is available to the couple the whole day. Even if brides are unsure of what they need or what I offer, that intro meeting allows me to understand the vision of the wedding. I can let the bride know what my style is and what I bring to the table."

Real Inspiration: Amy & Jon

Cheer and merriment were in the air the day this couple got married! It was the annual Charles Street St. Patrick's Day Parade in Baltimore! The couple had their ceremony and reception at the Tremont Grand, located in downtown Baltimore. Artful Weddings by Sachs Photography did an amazing job, as always, capturing the event. Amy, the bride, says "We loved Anne Sachs and her entire team; they made us feel like ours was the best wedding they had ever been to."

Amy's gorgeous gown was designed by Paloma Blanca. The bride's hair and make up were done by Baltimore Bridal Makeup, which Amy highly recommends. Christine of Fleur de Lis, provided the gorgeous flowers. She worked closely with Jon, the groom, who was in charge of all of the flowers and decor. Great job!

Jon planned an amazing proposal for Amy. He had both his mother and hers flown in for the event. With some elaborate planning, he proposed at the Brewer's Art (the location of their first date) in front of family. On one knee, he said, "You know that I’m not perfect; And God knows you’re not perfect. But nothing could be more perfect than us continuing to Live, Learn and Grow together. Make all my dreams come true… Will you marry me?" After many tears, Jon stood up and they embraced, he whispered "Does that mean yes?" She responded, "Yes." But, the surprises weren't over! After dinner, Jon led Amy downstairs to the dark bar area where she found about 20 of their closest friends (some from as far as New York) waiting to celebrate with them!

The amazing centerpieces included limes, peacock feathers, hydrangeas and ribbons, also from Fleur de Lis. Really beautiful! The cake was from Woodley Bakery. The custom cake topper, scuplted to resemble the couple's dog, came from Etsy. Lauren of the Tremont did a fabulous job of coordinating and taking care of the details. Jason of Absolute Entertainment was their DJ. Amy said, "he gave us the party we asked him for!" Amy also wanted my readers to know that their dance instructor, Demitri of Atlantic Ballroom, did an amazing job preparing them for their first dance!

I have become rather obsessed with pale champagne pink and nudes! Some brides choose to let their maids pick their own style of dresses, as long as they are in the same nude color family.

Real Inspiration: Kristin & Chuck

Kristin and Chuck recently shared their engagement shoot with us. They were kind enough to also share their wedding! They had their ceremony and reception at the Newton White Mansion in Mitchellville, MD. Located just under an hour south of Baltimore in Prince George's County, Newton White Mansion, is a Neo-Georgian-style brick mansion that sits on a lush 586 acres. A beautiful backdrop for a wedding!

The bride and groom chose to use Borrowed Blue Photography, who also did their engagement shoot. You can find more of their work on their blog. Kristin says, "Natalie and Jamie are an amazing team!" She was very pleased with them.

Kristin got her gorgeous gown from the Bridal Boutique, located in Columbia, MD. Venus was the designer. You can also find Venus at Lilys Bridal & Formalwear in Baltimore, MD. The satin heels came from White House/Black Market and were dyed teal at the Bridal Boutique to match the maid's dresses. The teal bridesmaids dresses, designed by Belsoie, from the Jasmine collection. They also came from the Bridal Boutique. The bride was very pleased with her hair and makeup, "done by a great team," sisters Crissy Engelskirch and Sarah Engelskirch-Boothe.

I really love this venue! The couple pass by the fountain after their vows. The beautiful teal and white centerpieces were done by Intrigue, based in Annapolis, MD. They used crystals, white flowers, branches and tall teal glass vases. They also did the bouquets.

The programs were designed by Kristin (impressive!) and were printed at Vistaprint. A great idea for the DIY bride! I'm quite smitten with the statues incorporated into the decor. Great job, Intrigue!

Kristin was completely pleased by the flowers from Intrigue and the decor, including linens and china provided by their caterer, Dennis Walz. Walz, characterized by Kristin as, "by far the best caterer around!" also did the bar, appetizers, and main course. The cake came from Sugar Bakers. The first tier was amaretto raspberry, second tier, chocolate with peanut butter mousse, and the third tier was vanilla cake with chocolate icing. All iced in German buttercream. Ok, now my mouth is watering!

It's been awhile since I've shown you what I've been up to! I actually have been working on a lot of custom bridal jewelry, just haven't taken the time to share that with you...I'll try to show you more soon. In the mean time, here is a beautifully simple order I recently finished! I really love these pieces because they are so simple and certainly something the bridesmaids will get a lot of use out of!

The bride chose large (14mm) slate grey glass pearl rounds with a simple sterling silver toggle clasp. For matching earrings, a slightly smaller (12mm) glass pearl on a sterling silver post. A great set that the bridemaids can wear for a lifetime. I like to use quality materials, like sterling silver, to avoid allergic reactions and pre-mature wear. With proper care, these pieces should hold up for many years to come!

If you want the bold look of a large pearl, choose glass pearls. They come in a wide variety of colors and are very budget-friendly. Want to add superior quality? Choose Swarovski crystal pearls, they also come in amazing shades and are a bit more durable, with layers of "pearlescence" atop a crystal bead.

Warehouse Wedding Gowns?

These days everyone is getting into the bridal "game." J. Crew, Anne Taylor, Anthropologie, and now... Costco. That's right, Costco. But, before you shake your head and close your laptop, take a look!

Costco has partnered with designer Kirstie Kelly to create a line of affordable gowns. The prices range from $699 to $1,399 (comparable to Vera Wang's White collection, available exclusively at David's Bridal). Kelly's gowns are usually priced $2,000 - $7,000. They are available in sizes 2 - 24, a much better size range than Wang's White (sizes 0 - 14).

Interview with Balance Boudoir - Part 2

Rissa Miller, professional photographer, and Ashlee Riddle, hair stylist and owner of Up Do’s for I Do’s, have teamed up to bring you the ultimate boudoir photography experience.

What is a boudoir shoot like?
"As far as the process of a shoot, all studios are different, but at balance boudoir, a shoot is somewhat structured and lots of fun. You’ll start with getting your hair and make-up professionally done by a stylist from our partners, Up Do’s for I Do’s– the ultimate in supermodel pampering. Then you change into your lingerie and our all-girl team will instruct you though the shoot. We can meet you at your place, or a chic hotel/B&B – or you can come to our studio. At the shoot, we can supplies props, jewelry and fun wardrobe accessories like fans, feathers or gloves – but we don’t provide shoes or lingerie..."

What kinds of packages do you offer?
"We have packages for all budgets and styles. Our simplest package is an a la carte shoot with one look and one style of hair & make-up by Up Do’s for I Do’s; our most popular is the pin-up calendar that includes 12 changes of wardrobe and 3 changes of hair & make-up by Up Do’s for I Do’s. We also have packages with coffee table books, folios, leather-bound flush mount albums, canvas wraps and playing cards."

And what do most brides-to-be choose to do?
"It varies widely. Most brides do a look with their veil and a set of pretty white, cream or soft blue lingerie. But we’ve seen black lace, red satin, football jerseys, skimpy bikinis and Army camo, to name a few! Many girls choose to pose with something that reflects their fiance’s interests – like a guitar, uniform or playing cards. All sorts of things can be turned into sweet nothings at a boudoir shoot! Really, your imagination is the limit!"

But, what if I don't look like a model?
"Ha ha – even models don’t really look like models! They have a lot of help from stylists, wardrobe, lighting experts, flattering poses and computers. And so will you. With incredible hair and make-up styling by Up Do’s for I Do’s, articulate posing directions and expert lighting from the girls at balance boudoir and your own well-fitted and flattering wardrobe every woman can be made into a super model. Oh – a great pair of high heels helps too. And if those things don’t make the picture a homerun already, a little “digital surgery” on the computer by our graphic designer can clean up any flaw."

What if I'm shy?
"Most girls feel shy when they arrive for their shoot. There’s nothing more vulnerable than being undressed – and then photographed! But have faith, any good photography team can put you at ease and help you to recognize and celebrate your own beauty! At balance boudoir, we have all been on the other side of the camera, so we know how it feels and we completely get it. We are experts at lighting and posing, so we know how to make you look good and will show you images along the way to put your mind at ease. Seeing yourself as a strong, beautiful woman can take practice – but it’s in there! And if you still need a little more help at the shoot, we have a bottle of white wine waiting."

Do you also do other types of photography that a bride-to-be might be interested in?
"In addition to boudoir, balance and Up Do’s for I Do’s also offers “glam the dress” shoots. Basically, “glam the dress” is our fashion-fantasy spin on “trash the dress.” At a glam shoot, the girls from Up Do’s for I Do’s give the bride a fun fashion look of hair and make-up – perhaps it mimicks her wedding style – or maybe it’s more couture and edgy.. Accessories, flowers and cool locations round out the process to complete the fantasy. It’s a high end answer to trash the dress for any bride who adores her wedding dress and wants to celebrate all that silk, satin and hand beading. Some brides go goth or punk; some go earthy, others go bold with color. Usually we talk before hand and create a plan for the shoot. It’s a lot of fun! We’ve done glam shoots before the wedding day and created displays for receptions. We’ve also done them after – even once as a seven year anniversary gift, where a bride made her wedding dress sexy with fishnets and red heels for her husband!"

Interview with Balance Boudoir- Part 1

I'm very fortunate that I got to interview the ladies at Balance Boudoir Photography! I met Rissa Miller and Ashley Riddle at A Wedding Soiree a few months ago. Miller, a professional photographer and Riddle, a hair stylist and owner of Up Do’s for I Do’s, team up to bring you the ultimate boudoir photography experience. Simply put, they bring sexy back and in a classy way!

A good way to understand the mindset of Balance Boudoir Photography is to hear about Miller's first boudoir photo shoot:

"My first boudoir shoot was over ten years ago when a friend from an exercise class asked me to shoot some sexy photos of her to give as a gift to her fiancé. We shot them on black and white film in her apartment. She had her hair and make-up professionally done first and she did three looks: one in a corset and garters, one in a plain black bra and panty set with her guy’s shirt and another in a tight guy’s undershirt with plain cotton briefs. We both had a blast and the resulting photos looked amazing.. What struck me though wasn’t just how artistic and gorgeous the pictures were, but how empowered my friend was by the images. She had so much more confidence. She even showed them to her mom, sister and female co-workers."

There are many reasons for brides-to-be and women to enjoy boudoir photography-
1. To have the experience! "Boudoir photography is far from a just a new fad. The female form is the original subject of artists from the beginning of recorded time and was among the first subjects for photographers in the 1800s. Boudoir photographs are simply an extension of that history and is an art form every woman should experience for herself.
2. You will feel gorgeous! "Most ladies go into their shoots thinking it’s primarily a gift for their significant other. But they almost always come out realizing it was also a great gift to themselves. Women who have a boudoir shoot done take a huge step forward in personal strength. They feel better in their bodies and have more respect for themselves as women."
3. Pre-wedding is a perfect time: "For new brides, it’s a great way to document a very special time in life when you are transition from being an “I” to a “we.” Many brides have strict fitness, diet, and /or skin care regimes leading up to the Big Day and a shoot is a perfect way to show off all that hard work. And after all that – it is still a great wedding or anniversary gift for your fiancé or husband!"

Real Inspiration: Dana & Adam

Dana and Adam had a "Baltimore-inspired" wedding. From the colors, purple and orange, to an appearance by the Raven, this was a Charm City wedding!

The beautiful couple had their wedding ceremony at Our Lady of Grace in Parkton, MD. The reception was on the same grounds at The Manor at Gunpowder Falls.

The bride was given an adorable handmade personalized hanger at her bridal shower, the gift came from etsy.com. Her purple satin shoes were by Me Too and from Zappos.com. Her cuff bracelet came from ebay.com.

The bride's gorgeous gown came from David's Bridal, its a Oleg Cassini. Her veil was also from David's and her hairpiece was from Cake and Wedding Cottage. The bridesmaid dresses, also from David's Bridal, were in the perfect "Raven's purple," technically called "Regency." The bride's perfect hair and make-up were done by Sherri Leonzio and Tricia Siejack, respectively. You can check out the local David's Bridal in Glen Burnie, MD.

The bride's rings are from Littman's in Towson and the groom's from Smyth in Timonium. All of the flowers, including bouquets and corsages were done by Audrey Johns. They found Johns through their caterer, Sterling Caterers. The centerpieces were included as part of their catering package.

The cake came from Desserts by Gina, also part of their catering package. Although, the couple chose to upgrade to fondant from a nominal fee. I absolutely love the "Baltimore" props, provided by their photographer, Amy Hershey of Forever in a Flash Photography. Hershey actually made the props! You can view more of Hershey's work on her Facebook page. The bride and groom were thrilled with all of their vendors! They also recommend their videographer, Complete Music and Video, and their DJ, Premier Mobile DJ's.

I asked Dana if she had any advice to give brides planning their weddings in the Baltimore area. She said, "Reseach- a lot! Attend bridal shows EARLY on - shortly after you get engaged. Weddingbee is a good site to use to interact with other brides-to-be, find wedding stuff on sale, etc." She also recommend Molly at David's Bridal. She also wants you to know that you can have a Baltimore-themed wedding anywhere, you don't have to pay the "downtown" prices. Thanks for the advice!

I'm in love...

And I thought you should know about it! I recently used Raw Olive's Pink Grapefruit Organic Sugar Scrub and fell head-over-heels. It's a very serious love affair. First, the scent is quite refreshing. Second, it had the perfect consistency (read: more scrub, less oil or stickiness). Next, I plan to try Raw Olive's Dead Sea Salt and Epson Salt Muscle Soak/Scrub. Yes, I still have swollen ankles! And I will be in a wedding in less than 2 months. I have a feeling this soak is just what I need to reduce the puffiness! I'm completely sold! It is made of dead sea salt, epson salt (highly recommended for those will aches, pains, bruising and swelling), unrefined, organic coconut oil, cold-pressed olive oil, raw honey and pure essential oils "to revitalize your muscles, skin and senses." I'm so ready! Not So Charming Price Tags- Getting Married in Charm City

According to the Knot.com Baltimore is number 14 out of the 20 most expensive areas to get married! Worse yet, our neighbors- Washington, DC, Northern Virginia and Suburban Maryland are number 11! The Knot surveyed 19,000 couples married in 2010. You can read the full report here. But don't pack up that wedding gown and take the ceremony on the road just yet! Here are some tips to save some money:

1. Choose your date wisely. Many venues off discounts for “off-months.” Also, chose any day other than Saturday, and you automatically save money! Consider having a day-time event or a cocktail ceremony instead of dinner. Serving guests lunch or hor d'oeuvres is a considerable price difference. If an evening ceremony is a “must,” consider a buffet.

2. Limit the professional photography. Look at your photographers smaller packages and make a list of your “must have” shots. Then think about limiting your time with the photographer to save more money. For example, do you really need professional shots of you getting ready? The photographer could arrive just before the ceremony. And cut the cake early so that the photographer can leave. You can always supply your guests with disposable cameras for candid photos. Now that most everyone is using a digital camera, you are likely to be bombarded with candids from guests via email and facebook.

3. Consider a pre-owned dress. Designer wedding gowns can cost a small fortune these days. Often you can find near-perfect condition gowns for less than half the cost of a new dress. Once you find a style you like, scour upscale consignment stores and the internet. Sites like preownedweddingdresses.com and ebay.com have a great selection and often the dresses were never worn!

4. DIY the flowers. Enlist some creative friends and family members to help you with your bouquet and centerpieces. There are many step-by-step instructions online to help you. The more simple the arrangement the better. You can buy flowers in bulk from your local flower market, costco.com or theflowerexchange.com. Remember it never hurts to ask if a vendor can do better on a price. You’ll be surprised how often people are willing to work with you. Try to stay flexible, compromise on things that are less important to save your money for what counts. Weddings are a celebration and should be a testament to the relationships in your lives, not your wealth.

Laura and Jason chose Charm City as their wedding locale. They had a very small ceremony (just 12 guests) at the Gramercy Mansion. A much larger reception held at waterfront Tabrizi's off of Key Highway followed. The couple lives in Federal Hill, so it seemed appropriate to choose a venue just down the street. Also, the bride fell in love with the space (and the view)!

Laura got her gown from David's Bridal. It was a David's Bridal design. Her gorgeous headpiece and veil is from David's as well. Each of the bridesmaids chose their own style of dress, but in the same color, "Lapis," also from Davids. You can visit David's Bridal in Glen Burnie, Bowie or Rockville.

The bride had only rave reviews for their photographer, Perskies, who took most of the beautiful images. The bouquets and centerpieces came from Perry Hall Florist. Laura said, "Perry Hall Florist nailed exactly what I wanted! I went thru hundreds of pictures of purple flowers and I explained what I was looking for and the feel of the containers and it turned out perfectly!" They had purple flowers (the color of the bridesmaids dresses) outside for the cocktail hour and white flowers inside, including tulips, orchids, calla lilies and white hydrangeas. They also used chocolate cosmos (which smell like chocolate)!

The couple had two cakes. The wedding cake was raspberry amaretto (sounds delish!) and the grooms cake was German chocolate with strawberries, which were dipped in white and dark chocolate to look like tuxedos and gowns. Cute idea! Both cakes came from SugarBakers Cakes, based in Catonsville, MD.

The reception included a photo booth, which was a part of their photo package from Perskies. The photo booth rental comes with props, but this "goofy" couple "really wanted to ham it up!" So, they went to Party City for additional props. Laura and Jason loved the photo booth pictures, "we still crack up looking at them!" Their DJ was Brian Starkloff from Absolute Entertainment. Laura said, "He was amazing! [He] kept everything flowing all night."

Flattering Flats?

So I recently sprained BOTH of my ankles. Ridiculous, I know. My most recent concern- will my ankles be ready for cute shoes in time for my friends' wedding? Currently I am sporting over-sized sneakers and really unattractive leg braces. Those should be off in time, but will I be ready to rock a stiletto or even a reasonable strappy sandal? Likely not. I recently went to the Alfred Angelo store in Springfield, VA. Thought I would share the experience with you and offer up some tips. Alfred Angelo offers reasonably priced bridesmaids dresses in a wide range of colors, styles and sizes. A sure way to please your maids!

Alfred Angelo offers several different types of fabrics, depending on the style of dress. In chiffon they offer 55 beautiful shades. I felt like the quality was on par with the prices.

We made an appointment to try on bridesmaids dresses. Although we were assigned one employee to help us during the whole experience, we would recommend checking out the selection on dresses online prior to arrival. It can be overwhelming. Not all styles come in all fabrics, so things can get confusing fast. At one point we had a dressing room stocked with dresses of all colors, sizes and shapes to try.

Obviously it was difficult enough to organize seven girls opinions, but when we started trying things on... So, definitely know what fabric you want ahead of time. And if possible, limit yourself to a certain number of styles.

All in all we were pleased with the dresses and selection. The bride choose the color and let the maids choose the style. Everyone was able to find something that was flattering for their body type.

Hot Time, Summer In Charm City

I recently did a post on rainy day weddings. But, there is more to consider when it comes to Baltimore weather. Our notorious heat and humidity! Last summer, on the hottest day of the year, my mother got married- outside! I was the maid of honor, holding the bride's bouquet and my own, squinting from the bright sun and watching beads of sweat drop from my nose to my chest. Not a hand free to wipe the sweat from my brow! In the photographs I look like I had been hiking in the rain forest. My hair, that I had taken careful time to straighten, was frizzed out at the ends and slick at the roots. I ended up to be pulling it back. And my make-up? Long gone!

No one wants to talk about sweat, but we all do it! Some more than others. And if you are the bride, you are likely going to sweat. You will be wearing a dress that can weigh up to 20lbs! Not to mention the layers of tulle, your corset, etc. Further more, being the center of attention and being pulled in multiple directions can lead to stress-sweat.

Here is a photo (source) of a bride before and after her ceremony. I think she looks great in both, but clearly sweat was a factor.

So what can you do?
1. Stay hydrated. Have a bottle of water with you as much as possible.

2. Have a friend act as your "beauty police." You're attention shouldn't be on the shine level of your forehead, but your friends can. She can let you know if you are starting to shine and give you some oil absorbing wipes to keep you looking fresh.

3. Take a break. If you feel overwhelmed and overheated, try to take a time out. Excuse yourself and take a few moments in front of a fan. I've even heard of using mini ice packs (someone suggested sticking them in your bra), but i think sticking a cool pack on your neck for a few minutes could work wonders.

4. Use the proper make-up. Use mattifying moisturizer, water-proof mascara and eyeliner (they are usually the first to start to run when sweating), and light or powdery foundation. And always have blotting papers on hand.

5. Know your venue. Where will you be getting ready? Is it air conditioned? Will there be fans? My friend told me a story about a summer-time wedding in hot Charlottesville, VA where each of the bridesmaids brought huge floor fans to get ready with. You want to keep everyone cool from the start!

6. A quick list of items to keep you cool:

Real Inspiration: Kristin & Chuck Engagement Photos

Borrowed Blue Photography shot Kristin and Chuck's Baltimore engagement session. They got engaged in Paris. Their story is so romantic, Kristin tells it: "In November of 2009, I got to go on the trip of a lifetime to Paris, France with my (then) boyfriend, Chuck. We spent our days roaming the cobblestone streets, in and out of museums, and over indulging in french cuisine. Every night we would visit the park outside the Eiffel Tower sitting and watching the light show. It was so romantic and quite a sight to see. On our first day in Paris we toured the Eiffel Tower and afterward, stopped at a small stand selling crepes. I proceeded to order my chocolate banana crepe and hot chocolate failing to order a brownie for Chuck, who could have very well ordered his own but still swears they don't speak English over there!

He was really upset to find I had forgot his brownie and we actually fought briefly over this in the middle of Paris! He quickly forgave me but little did I know how big the role of a silly little brownie could be. On our last night in Paris after a long day of sight seeing, Chuck decides I still owe him a brownie from the stand at the Eiffel Tower. So i try to be a good sport about it grumbling only a bit, but ultimately bundled back up and made the trek from our hotel to the park in order to get his darn brownie. After all, I did owe him.

As we were walking through the park holding hands and enjoying the last few moments of our trip together (me still grumbling about the brownie) he stops me and gets down on one knee pulling out a little white box from his pocket and asks me to marry him!!! I teared up and said YES! Then I giggled because not only could I not see the ring because it was pitch dark outside, but because the ring was upside down in the box. Chuck got up and slid the beautiful ring on my finger so I could see it and, still in shock, I immediately asked if he still wanted the brownie. It turns out he didn't and it was just an excuse to get me to this spot.

We had a good laugh and a nice romantic moment in the park watching the Eiffel Tower lit up in all its glory. We opted for champagne and creme brulee to celebrate instead of that darn brownie. We've since then decided that the groom's cake will be...a brownie cake...and that is the moment that started the beginning of the rest of our lives." ♥

The Chaos of My Creative Process

I woke up early this morning, had some caffeine, got out my iPod and sat down in my studio. Time to be creative. I'm fortunate that when I find myself stressed or suffering with insomnia (for some reason, an issue this week), I can always do my favorite thing- make jewelry. When I work on my designs I tend to get into a creative space in my mind, very little disrupts me. My dogs jump around, bark at my neighbors leaving for work, but I pay no attention. People who have witnessed this call it my "zone," as I will often have conversations, or at the very least respond to what they are saying, with little recollection of it later. Best not to ask me important things if I have a pair of pliers in my hands...its like trying to talk to a sleepwalker!

I love designing. I rarely sketch before I work, although sometimes its necessary for my custom work. Often I sit down in front of what must look like an absolute disaster to everyone else. Spools of wire, tools, tiny beads, little bags of gemstones scattered about in what seems like no rhyme or reason. It looks as though a tornado hit my studio- all the time. But, somehow I tend to know (generally) where things are and have a method to my madness. I like to work with the materials- the gemstones, strands of pearls, and shiny chains, feel them in my hands and visualize what they could be.

When I get in a fresh shipment of materials, I'm giddy. Like a kid in a candy store running his hands through barrels of candies, I rip open packages, touching everything, and start imagining the possibilities. And going to a gem show, well, just imagine a bride at a Vera Wang sample sale. I'm ready to throw down for some concave cut AAA grade green amethyst.

How I became a jewelry designer is still a mystery to me. Growing up in my parents' fabrics and crafts stores I spent many an afternoon making some of the ugliest jewelry you have ever seen. Not to mention the quilts I made for my dolls, which at best could be described as "darling" or a similar term adults use to describe train-wrecks of creativity children show them with pride. But, I began making jewelry as an adult, and although it was a rocky start (I would be ashamed if anyone ever sees the piles of jewelry I made in the "early days"), I pursued my hobby with passion. Eventually people began to buy my pieces. I had someone stop me in a bar and literally purchase jewelry off of my wrist. So, here I am, making jewelry with that same passion, and hopefully creating pieces that people will love for many years. Gifts, symbols of love and affections, little pieces of myself, making the world a little happier. Back to the studio I go...
